Applications

There are more than 400 species of aloe plants, but it is Aloe Barbadensis, also known as aloe, which has traditionally been used for its medicinal properties and its benefits in natural cosmetics, both in its natural aloe vera essence and in its different forms, moisturizing cream, soap, mask, etc.

Cosmetic

Aloe vera for cosmetics

The regenerating and soothing capacity of aloe vera gel has made it a highly demanded active ingredient in the cosmetics industry.

It softens the skin, allowing it to maintain its natural moisture and, thanks to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, promotes tissue regeneration.

The nutrient-rich composition of aloe vera gel acts on the skin with an anti-aging effect by preserving it from the aggressions of the sun’s rays and preventing dryness, both of which are determining factors in the appearance of spots and wrinkles.

It is perfect for all skin types and after its application it leaves a non-oily and fresh sensation that is very pleasant in beauty products such as facial creams.

Food

Aloe vera for food

Due to its antioxidant properties, modulator of the immune system and its ability to reduce lipid and glucose levels, in recent years the marketing of food supplements manufactured entirely with pure aloe vera juice has increased in food products. A wide variety of products include aloe vera as the main component. Consumers can find an extensive catalog of products such as juices, capsules, jams or aloe vera pieces in syrup.

Medicine

Aloe vera for medicine

The properties and uses of aloe vera have been widely known since ancient times, forming a prominent part of traditional Chinese and Indian medicine, due to its many properties in the treatment of skin diseases, diabetes and hypertension. In Western society it is one of the medicinal plants whose use is most widespread, especially topically for the treatment of burns.

The aloe plant contains components with anti-inflammatory properties and magnesium, which gives it anesthetic and analgesic effects. Its gel also contains ingredients with antimicrobial capacity that prevent wound infection and act as a cell regenerator.

Hygiene

Aloe vera for hygiene

The presence of organic aloe vera gel is increasingly valued in personal hygiene products. Its high mucilage content makes it the perfect component for soaps and facial and body cleansing products as it allows the skin to maintain its moist layer while favoring the elimination of impurities and excess fat, essential aspects to show off a healthy skin.

Shampoos, gels, soaps and deodorants are products that we can easily find on the market made exclusively from aloe vera leaves or in combination with other natural elements such as olive oil, rosehip oil or aromatic plant essences.

Cultivation of natural aloe vera plants and leaves

Aloe vera barbadensis is a succulent plant native to Africa, which has been known in Spain for centuries as a result of the Muslim heritage of the peninsula and which spread widely throughout the Mediterranean basin.

It belongs to the Liliaceae family and is characterized by its long, fleshy and water-rich leaves. Aloe leaves can reach up to a meter in height in the best growing conditions, their edges have small teeth and their flowers are tubular in shape and intense yellow.

It is a xerophilous plant that adapts perfectly to dry climates with little rainfall, and temperatures ranging from 18º to 40º. It grows in full sun, in all types of soils as long as they have good drainage that prevents the ground from becoming waterlogged, although it prefers sandy soils with a slightly acidic pH and sufficient organic matter for optimal growth.

At Alover we are organic aloe barbadensis wholesalers, the organic matter needs of our crop are covered exclusively with natural fertilizers and compost-type fertilizers, coming from the decomposition of plant matter from the action of earthworms, fungi and bacteria.

The reproduction of aloe barbadensis is through children or stems of an adult plant, separating the children from the plant, cleaning the roots and planting them with a lot of light to favor their development. In our plantation we are self-sufficient with our own aloe plants, thus ensuring the quality and plant health conditions of our crop.

Earth is not our planet, it is our home.
Look deep into nature and then you will understand everything better.

Sello de calidad

Quality of our aloe vera

Aloe vera gel contains approximately 99% of water, being very rich in mucilages (soluble fiber of a viscous nature) among which acemannan stands out.
Chemically, it is characterized by the presence of phenolic compounds with great antioxidant power, which are generally classified into two main groups: chromones and anthraquinones.

Chromones are natural bioactive components, they are used as anti-inflammatories and antibiotics. While anthraquinones are the basis of many colorants in nature and are responsible for the laxative effect of aloe vera juice.

Different scientific studies have determined that the beneficial properties of aloe vera depend directly on its quality, thus in low quality there is a higher concentration of aloin, a substance that can have unwanted effects. In order to maintain adequate quality standards, organizations such as the International Aloe Science Council (IASC) have set certified quality standards, stating that an aloe vera product must have at least 5% acemannan and less than 10 ppm (parts per million) of aloin.

At Alover we grow high quality aloe vera plants that produce aloe vera gel that meet the elevated standards of organic plantations with an acemannan percentage higher than that established by the IASC.

If you want to enjoy the benefits of aloe vera, we recommend that both for direct use from fresh leaves, and for consumption of aloe vera gel or juice, you select aloe vera products from organic farming and whose composition has been certified by a prestigious organization.

Aloe vera properties

The multiple properties of the components of aloe vera have been documented over the years as its chemical composition was studied.

Antibacterial property

Its attributions are mainly due to two components: acemannan, a polysaccharide present in its gel with the ability to stimulate the immune system and that is not produced in the body after puberty, so it is necessary to consume it with food. And the anthraquinones that act preventing the reproduction of bacteria and viruses.

Anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties

Aloe vera extract contains acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) which decreases inflammation and reduces pain.

Nutritional properties

Aloe Vera contains water-soluble vitamins: B1, B2, B3, folic acid and C, and fat-soluble vitamins A and E.

Vitamin B1 facilitates the conversion of carbohydrates into energy, favoring nervous and cardiovascular function. Its deficiency produces tiredness and muscular weakness.

Vitamin B2 acts on body growth and the generation of red blood cells. Deficiency produces disorders in the skin and mucous membranes and in the nervous system.

Vitamin B3 has as its main function the generation of energy from carbohydrates and its deficiency generates tiredness, depression and headache.

Folic acid has been shown to prevent malformations of the central nervous system that lead to spontaneous abortions, mortality at birth or permanent disabilities, which is why it is usually supplemented by pregnant women.

Vitamins A and E are powerful natural antioxidants, both of which are essential for vision, the immune system and fertility.

Vitamin C is needed for the growth and repair of body tissues, it helps in the absorption of iron and is a powerful antioxidant that captures free radicals responsible for cell aging.

Some 17 amino acids have been determined in its composition, the main one being arginine, which is involved in collagen synthesis, as well as different enzymes involved in cellular metabolic processes.

As for the presence of minerals, in aloe vera have been identified: calcium, phosphorus, potassium, iron, sodium, magnesium, manganese, copper, chromium, zinc.

Last but not least, glucomannan is present, a soluble fiber with a high capacity to capture water and which is used to combat obesity by producing a feeling of satiety and increasing intestinal transit. Due to its function of slowing down the emptying of the stomach, it also decreases glucose and insulin levels since it hinders absorption by the intestinal mucosa.

The miracle plant

Aloe Vera Uses

The part of the plant that is used to obtain aloe vera juice are the leaves and there are two types of processing:

Whole leaf aloe vera juice
The leaves are grinded and to eliminate the coarser particles, they are subjected to enzymatic treatment and subsequent filtering, in order to eliminate the aloin present in the bark of the leaves.

Aloe vera inner juice
The green bark of the aloe is removed by hand or mechanically, the subsurface yellow latex containing the aloin is rinsed off, and the gel inside is extracted and is extracted to produce aloe juice.

Thanks to these processes, three types of commercial products can be obtained:
1. The yellow exudate that makes up the latex and contains aloin is used in the pharmaceutical industry for its laxative properties.

2. The mucilage concentrate (acemannan).
From the inside of the leaf, it is known as a gel and is used in cosmetic and dermatological products for skin care, or in the food industry as a dietary supplement.

3. The oil that is extracted from the fat fraction of the leaves and that is used as a pigment in cosmetics and for its sedative qualities.

Growth and development

Aloe vera cultivation in Spain

As in other Mediterranean regions

The cultivation of aloe vera plants is widespread in Spain since its climatic and soil conditions favor its growth. Levante, Andalusia, the Canary Islands and Balearic archipelagos began the path of its implementation and it has been increasing over recent years at the same time that market demand has grown.

The National Association of Aloe Entrepreneurs (ASOCIALOE)

It started with eight associates in 2010 and currently has more than 90, and predicts an exponential growth in the sector, since Europe consumes 20% of the world’s production of aloe but is unable to be self-sufficient today.

We are the European country with the largest area dedicated to its cultivation

Thanks to its special growth conditions, that makes Spanish aloe vera one of the best quality worldwide. Quality that is fundamentally due to several factors:

  • Organic production
  • Harvest after three years when the plant is in optimal conditions
  • High blade performance
  • Proximity processing that maintains the freshness of freshly cut leaves

Where is the aloe vera plant grown?

As it is a plant with an affinity for dry climates and well-drained soils, aloe vera has spread widely throughout the Mediterranean basin, with special incidence in the Canary Islands where, thanks to its mild climate, the cultivation of aloe Vera has become one of the most profitable crops.

In recent years, however, the number of hectares has been growing considerably in other regions, Andalusia being the autonomous community where the largest number of plantations are currently concentrated.

How long does it take for an aloe vera plant to grow?

The optimal age for harvesting aloe vera leaves is between two and five years when we talk about wholesale cultivation. Reproduction occurs by suckers that are harvested when they reach between 15 and 30 cm, grow in the nursery for six months and then are transplanted to harvest the leaves 18 months after transplanting, when they reach 60 cm or 400 g. of weight.

In case of cultivation at home, it is recommended that the lower leaves are only cut when the pot has at least twelve leaves of sufficient size and new ones are allowed to grow before cutting a lower leaf again. Normally in three months it grows up to four leaves with the right temperature, light and humidity conditions.

How much does one hectare of aloe vera produce?

On average 21 to 27 tons per hectare per year. In suitable soils and climatological conditions, about 24 tons per hectare can be obtained in dry land, and reach up to 45 tons/Ha if it is grown in a greenhouse with drip irrigation.

Profitability of aloe vera cultivation

The cultivation of aloe vera has been presented in recent years as an alternative for farmers against crops such as vines and olive trees.

Economic profitability

According to ASOCIALOE, the studies carried out determine that it is a crop with high economic profitability from the third year, since the first two years investment is needed to prepare the land, buy the suckers, plant them and take care of them. It will be from the third year when the income curve begins to take off, being able to reach a net profit of €15,000 to €20,000 per hectare.

Social profitability

It is determined by the fact that it is a crop that requires labor, since all the planting, harvesting, fertilization and weed removal tasks are manual, generating employment in the area.

Organic profitability

By adapting to dry climates, even on sloping land, its cultivation is very suitable for combating soil erosion.

What variety of aloe vera is the best?

Depending on the product to be obtained: latex, aloe gel or suckers, some varieties are more appropriate than others.

Aloe Barbadensis Miller
Among the commercial varieties, Aloe Barbadensis stands out, with a high yield in the production of gel and suckers and good yield in the production of latex with a percentage of aloin that can reach up to 26%.

Aloe Ferox Miller
Also known as Cape aloe, it is native to the South African coast, it is characterized by having a higher mineral content than aloe vera barbadensis and by its high performance in the production of latex, about twenty times more than other aloe species.
