Oral applications

The medicinal benefits of aloe vera consumption vary according to whether the aloe vera latex or gel is ingested, and especially according to the percentage concentration of its active ingredients in each preparation.

Improving transit

Laxative

In pharmacological products, it is used for its laxative action derived from the aloin content of the latex or acíbar, which is the dark yellow sap found between the bark of the leaves and the pulp.

It should be noted that uncontrolled consumption of latex from fresh leaves is not recommended, as it may impair renal function due to the impossibility of establishing a safe dose, or cause adverse reactions with other medicines.

Anticarcinogenic

Studies by Lissoni and colleagues in 1998 showed that the administration of aloe vera in tincture form to 10%, together with melatonin, slows the progression of tumours resistant to other traditional therapies to a greater extent than if melatonin alone is administered.

Ulcers and intestinal inflammation

Thanks to the gastroprotective effect of the acemannan in its gel, aloe vera is used to reduce stomach acidity and regulate pH. And because of its anti-inflammatory properties, its use in the treatment of ulcerative colitis is being studied, with promising but as yet inconclusive results.

Diabetes mellitus

In gel form, it has traditionally been used in Latin America and Arabia to lower blood glucose levels and reduce triglyceride concentrations, which helps to improve cardiovascular function.
